Australian Taxation Office’s Super Fund Lookup

Registry Direct uses the Australian Taxation Office’s (ATO) Super Fund Lookup service to confirm the ABN, registered name and status of Australian superannuation funds.

The service covers self-managed super funds (SMSFs) and funds regulated by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA). Other Australian entities with an ABN can be verified using the Australian Business Register’s Free ABN Lookup service.

Important: A successful Super Fund Lookup confirms only the information returned by the ATO. It does not complete the fund’s AML/CTF verification or replace any additional trust verification required under your organisation’s AML/CTF program.

For an SMSF, additional verification may include verifying its trustees, members or beneficiaries, beneficial owners and controllers, governing structure, and the authority of anyone acting on its behalf. Supporting documents such as the current trust deed and relevant amendments or deeds of variation may also be required.

Verifying a super fund

1. Go to the contact’s Contact details page.
2. In the Verification section, locate the Free Super Fund Lookup module.
3. Click Verify with Super Fund Lookup.
4. The status returned by the ATO will be displayed in the module. See the ATO’s Super Fund Lookup status guidance for an explanation of the possible statuses.
5. The registered fund name returned by the lookup will be displayed below the status.
6. Click View full verification details to view all information returned by the lookup.

The Super Fund Lookup result should be considered together with the other information, documents and verification results collected for the fund.

Supplying an ABN

An ABN must be recorded against the trust before the Super Fund Lookup can be performed.

To add an ABN:

1. Go to the Identification details section of the contact’s Contact details page and click Edit.
2. For Does this trust have an ABN?, select Yes.
3. Enter the ABN.
4. If required, click Fetch trust name to use the Free ABN Lookup service to retrieve the registered trust name.
5. Click Save.

You can then return to the Verification section and perform the Super Fund Lookup.
